Router buying guide

1. Match your internet plan

For plans up to 300 Mbps, any good dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router is enough. For 1 Gbps plans, pick Wi-Fi 6/7 with gigabit ports; above 1 Gbps you need a 2.5G or faster WAN port.

2. Wi-Fi 5 vs 6 vs 7

Wi-Fi 6 is the sweet spot for most homes in 2026. Wi-Fi 7 helps with multi-gig plans and many new devices. Wi-Fi 5 is fine only on tight budgets.

3. Home size & walls

A single router usually covers an apartment or small house (up to ~1,500 sq ft / 140 m²). For larger homes, thick brick or concrete walls and multi-floor houses, a mesh system (Deco, Orbi, eero, ZenWiFi) can help reduce dead zones.

4. Number of devices

Phones, TVs, laptops, cameras and smart plugs all count. Over 30 devices? Prefer Wi-Fi 6/7 with OFDMA and MU-MIMO.

5. What to check before you buy

Spend on coverage first, then on Wi-Fi generation. This site does not show prices; check the live price on Amazon. If your ISP gives you a modem/ONT or gateway, you may only need a router (or mesh) behind it, not a new modem. Check that the model is sold in your Amazon store.
